2 dead after stolen vehicle crashes into pole during Aurora police pursuit

Two people in a stolen car died on Monday after slamming into a traffic light pole during a pursuit by Aurora police officers, according to police.

During a Monday afternoon news conference, Aurora Police Department Commander Justin Shipley said the crash ensued after police attempted a traffic stop on a sedan stolen out of Fort Collins.

At 11:26 a.m., Aurora police officers were called to track the stolen vehicle. Police tracked the vehicle to East Mississippi Avenue and South Peoria Street, where, at 11:32 a.m., they attempted a traffic stop. The suspect then fled northbound on Peoria, according to Shipley.

Less than a minute later, the driver lost control while trying to make a left turn onto East Alameda Avenue from South Peoria Street and struck the pole at high speed.

Shipley said the two people who occupied the vehicle died on impact.

“The suspect failed to yield to our officers’ traffic stop and made the decision to flee and drive erratically,” Shipley said. “The officers were having a hard time safely keeping up with the suspect due to his speed and erratic driving behavior, which resulted in the crash.”

APD’s traffic unit is investigating the crash. There will be an internal investigation into the pursuit, according to Shipley.

The suspect in the crash has yet to be identified.
