Father and son face 10 charges in deadly Lakewood street racing crash

Judicial officials filed a combined 10 felony charges against a father and son Wednesday in connection with a fatal November crash that allegedly involved street racing.

Gregory Giles, 65, and Bruce Giles, 26, each face five charges, including vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and reckless driving, after two people were killed and three injured while the pair were allegedly street racing in Lakewood, according to a news release from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Two people — a 26-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man — died in the hospital after their Toyota 4Runner was hit by the two men while making a left turn at the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Mississippi Avenue on Nov. 13, according to the release. Three others were also injured in the crash, including an 18-year-old who suffered a serious bodily injury.

The two men had been driving together from Highway 285 and South Kipling Parkway toward the intersection with Mississippi Avenue when the crash occurred. Gregory Giles, driving a 2015 Ford Explorer, and Bryce Giles, driving a 2014 Ford Expedition, were both traveling faster than 90 mph just five seconds before the crash, according to the release.

Police later identified the victims of the crash, which took place around 9 p.m., as Demi Iglesias and Dalton Smith. The two suspects turned themselves in to police on Nov. 24, nearly a week-and-a-half after the crash.

Gregory and Bryce Giles are each being held on a $250,000 cash only bond, according to the release. Their next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 18.
