Adam Prentice rumbles for NFL career-long gain vs. Raiders: ‘I definitely was trying to score’ | Broncos notebook
Adam Prentice had touchdown dreams on the longest run of his NFL career.
The Broncos fullback did not cross the goal line on Sunday in a 24-17 road win over the Raiders. But his 18-yard rumble in the third quarter moved the chains and extended a touchdown drive. It also showcased the growing versatility of Prentice in coach Sean Payton’s offense.
“I definitely was trying to score. I’m a little bummed that I didn’t. But it is what it is. We’ll work on it next time, hopefully,” Prentice said on a Monday teleconference call with reporters. “I think the last time I had a run that long was in high school. I haven’t run the ball too much into open space like that. … That was the longest run of my NFL career, for sure.”
Offensive linemen Quinn Meinerz and Mike McGlinchey quickly ran to Prentice in celebration after the play.
“We had great push up front and the offensive line collapsed it down on the back side,” Prentice said. “I just kind of squeaked out the back and it just split. You couldn’t ask for a better hole than we got up front. I just took off. It was awesome.”
Prentice signed with the Broncos in training camp to help alleviate the injury loss of Michael Burton (hamstring). His role has grown from a primary blocker to an especially reliable third-down option. Prentice has gained a first down on nine of 13 offensive touches this season.
“One thing about (Prentice) is you know exactly what you’re getting. You’re never fooled,” Payton said postgame Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. “And his run fits, his blocking fits — all those things for a fullback — I’m sure when we look at the film, he played well.”
Resilient defense
The Broncos allowed a touchdown on the first Las Vegas possession on Sunday. The Raiders went 70 yards on 10 plays and scored on quarterback Geno Smith’s 15-yard pass to tight end Brock Bowers. The game was tied, 7-7, midway through the first quarter.
“It didn’t really bother us much,” cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian reflected on Monday. “Obviously, we didn’t want them to score. But our mindset was just to go back out there and make a play or get a stop the next drive. … That’s exactly what we did.”
The Broncos defense made the Raiders one dimensional. Las Vegas rushed for only 40 total yards. Denver also sacked Smith four times. Las Vegas scored 10 points in garbage time of a mostly dominant performance.
“When we’re down, we don’t feel any type of way. It doesn’t faze us,” McMillian said. “We just always feel like we have that confidence that we’re going to win the game. We’re going to make the plays when it comes down to it. … In the playoffs, when adversity strikes, we’ll be ready for it.”
Briefly
The Broncos are signing RB Sincere McCormick to their practice squad, according to NFL media reports. McCormick appeared in five games with the Raiders last season with 39 carries for 183 yards. McCormick, undrafted out of UTSA, was previously on the 49ers and Cardinals practice squads this season. … LB Garret Wallow, released by the Broncos, was signed on waivers Monday by the 49ers, according to the NFL’s transactions wire. … Packers coach Matt LaFleur spoke highly about the Broncos at his Monday news conference. He told Green Bay reporters: “We’ve got a hell of a test. I mean, this (Broncos) defense, they’re for real. One of the top defenses in the league.”
