Broncos promote Jordan Turner to 53-man roster on 24th birthday, elevate Michael Bandy, Sam Ehlinger

On his 24th birthday, Jordan Turner received some news to remember.

The rookie linebacker was signed off the Broncos practice squad to the 53-man roster. He takes an open spot on the roster after tight end Marcedes Lewis was waived Thursday and officially signed Saturday back to the practice squad.

Turner was out of his three allowed elevations, so he had to be signed to the 53-man roster to play again for Denver this season.

Turner will be available on special teams for Sunday’s game against Green Bay at Empower Field at Mile High and will provide depth at linebacker behind starters Alex Singleton and Dre Greenlaw and top reserve Justin Strnad.

The Broncos on Saturday also elevated wide receiver Michael Bandy and quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the practice squad for Sunday’s game. Bandy, in line for his third appearance of the season, will provide depth with wide receiver Pat Bryant out with a hamstring injury. It’s the first elevation of the season for Ehlinger.

Ehlinger likely won’t be active against the Packers, but the Broncos want to reward him with a bigger game check due to his loyalty to the team. Ehlinger has turned down opportunities to join a 53-man roster on other teams. He is likely to get three allowed elevations before the end of the season.

Jones-Hufanga formidable safety duo

When Brandon Jones was asked if he and Talanoa Hufanga comprise the NFL’s best safety duo, he didn’t hesitate in his answer.

“There’s some good duos out there, but I put us up there,” said the Broncos stalwart.

Jones is in his second season with Denver, and Hufanga is in his first. Denver coach Sean Payton, in his third season, said it had been a quest to beef up the Broncos on the back end of the defense.

“I like the way (Jones and Hufanga are) playing,” Payton said. “I would say, in the last two years, a big part of what we felt was important (was at safety). That’s critical. Their communication, and there’s a lot that’s on their plate.”

When Jones was asked to name other top safety duos, he pointed to Green Bay’s Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams and to Houston’s Jalen Pitre and Calen Bullock.

With the Broncos facing the Packers, there will plenty of top safeties on display.

RB questions for Packers

The Packers on Friday listed star Josh Jacobs as questionable for Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Now they have another issue at running back.

Top reserve Emanuel Wilson was listed Saturday as questionable for the game due to an illness. Wilson rushed for 107 yards on Nov. 23 against Minnesota when Jacobs was out with a bad knee.

For depth, the Packers elevated running back Pierre Strong from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
