Broncos’ ‘Saint Nik’ Bonitto provides kids with Christmas shopping spree through foundation

JOHNSTOWN – “Saint Nik” made some Christmas deliveries Tuesday night and a lot of kids were thrilled.

Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, through his Bonitto Family Foundation, hosted about 50 kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County for a shopping spree at Scheels in Johnstown. The sporting goods store provided each one with a $100 gift card.

“Just giving opportunities for kids in different families all across (the area) and just being there to help out in any way I can is the main thing for me,’’ said Bonitto, who leads the Broncos with 12.5 sacks.

When Bonitto arrived at Scheels, he was given a standing ovation by the kids.

“It was pretty dope seeing all them just cheering and stuff when I walked in and just seeing the smiles and how excited they were,’’ Bonitto said. “Just being able to give them this opportunity is pretty cool for me.”

Each kid got a T-shirt provided by Charlies Tee’s. They read on the front “Sacks of Joy by Saint Nik” and on the back had his No. 15 with “Bonitto” written above it. A dinner was provided by King of Wings.

“I really like Nik Bonitto because I watch him all the time,’’ said Tyan Paytoe, 9, of Wellington. “I’m really lucky to meet him.”

Paytoe and his friend Mason Moore, 10, of Loveland, also were excited to go on the shopping spree. Both bought some toy cars.

Sound familiar?

Bonitto, 26, said when he was a kid he liked to get cars for Christmas, including monster trucks.

Bonitto’s mother, Sandra Penn, was more specific. Speaking by phone from her home in the Atlanta area, she summarized what her son really liked receiving for Christmas.

“When he was really young, he was into cars,’’ she said. “He loved cars, anything cars. And he liked Scooby Doo. Anything Scooby Doo. He liked the figurines of Scooby Doo. He had the Scooby Doo car. That was his thing.”

Bonitto’s love for Scooby Doo has continued. He said at the Broncos’ Halloween party this season, he came dressed as Scooby Doo.

Bonitto had fun Tuesday night posing for photos and signing autographs.

“He loves kids,’’ Penn said. “I’m so happy that he’s doing it for the kids. When he first got to Denver (in 2022), I have a cousin who lives in Denver who told him, ‘Why don’t we do some type of gifts for the kids during Christmas time?’ When he got into his foundation, that’s one of the things he really wanted to do.”

Bonitto launched his foundation earlier this year. He had an event last month in which he distributed turkeys before Thanksgiving.

Bonitto last season was named second-team All-Pro and is a candidate this season for first-team honors. He is second in fan voting at his position for the Pro Bowl Games and is likely to make his second straight Pro Bowl.

Bonitto signed a four-year, $106 million contract extension before the season that will take him through 2029. His strong play has helped the Broncos to a 12-2 record, with an ongoing 11-game winning streak.

The latest win was 34-26 on Sunday over Green Bay. The Broncos, after giving up 251 yards in the first half, held the Packers to 111 in the second half.

“I still feel like we got a lot more, especially defensively,’’ Bonitto said. “As good as we played in the second half, I feel like we could have been doing that all game and things like that. It’s just little stuff that’s going to take us from being how good we are right now to being the great defense I know we can be.”

Next up for the Broncos is a home game Sunday against Jacksonville (10-4). The Broncos, who have a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) in the AFC West, could clinch the division as soon as Sunday and even the No. 1 playoff seed in the AFC.

“Jacksonville is another good one in our conference,’’ Bonitto said. “So, there’s a lot at stake when it comes as far as being the one seed and stuff like that. We just have to stay the course. We can’t get too high. We got to stay level-headed because Jacksonville’s a really good opponent and they’re rolling right now.”

Bonitto will be back at practice Wednesday. The Broncos had Tuesday off, and the Christmas deliveries by “Saint Nik” were done by the end of the night.
