Broncos waive Calvin Throckmorton with Ben Powers close to return

ENGLEWOOD – The Broncos on Thursday waived guard Calvin Throckmorton, clearing a spot for guard Ben Powers to return to the active roster.

Throckmorton could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers at 2 p.m. Friday. A spot is now open for Powers to be activated off injured reserve by Saturday. Powers, who underwent biceps surgery after being hurt Oct. 5 at Philadelphia, was designated for return from injured reserve Dec. 10 and a source expects him to be ready for Sunday’s game against Jacksonville barring a setback.

Powers was deemed not ready to return for last Sunday’s 34-26 win over Green Bay. He was listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday at Broncos Park.

Powers has been Denver’s starting left guard, but Alex Palczewski has played well in relief. It remains to be seen if Powers would move immediately back into the starting lineup when he returns.

The Broncos have an opening on their practice squad, so Throckmorton could be added to it without a player being released.

The Broncos on Wednesday designated linebacker Karene Reid for return from injured reserve. He is also a candidate to be placed back on the 53-man roster by Saturday.

Reid could be needed against the Jaguars since linebacker Justin Strnad suffered an ankle injury against the Packers and didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday.

The Broncos on Thursday also listed defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers as limited in practice due to “rest.”
