Tebow, Thomas lift Broncos to OT playoff win over Steelers | Jan. 8, 2012 | Top 150 Colorado Sports Moments

Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.

Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati and a committee of 10 compiled and will release the list every week until the No. 1 moment on July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

Today’s top moment in Colorado sports history:

No. 131

Jan. 8, 2012

The heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers battled back from a 20-6 deficit to force overtime with the Denver Broncos after tying the game at 23-all in an AFC wild-card game. Denver got the ball first at its own 20 to start the extra session, which would last all of 11 seconds. Tim Tebow threw a play-action pass to Demaryius Thomas, who caught the ball at the Denver 38 and outran Steeler defenders to the end zone for an 80-yard score and a 29-23 Bronco win that culminated in the quickest ending to an overtime in NFL history. The previous quickest involved a former Colorado Buffalo: on Thanksgiving Day 1980, David Williams returned the overtime kickoff 95 yards to give Chicago a 23-17 win at Detroit — 16 seconds into the extra session.
