Multiple highways shut down due to “safety concerns” amid 80+ MPH winds in Colorado

Winds reaching above 80 miles per hour have resulted in multiple major roads being closed in northern Colorado. The shut downs are due to safety concerns related to fire risk, flying debris, and low visibility amid blowing dust.

Closures include:

  • I-25 in both directions from Owl Canyon (exit 281) to the Wyoming Border
  • US-36 in both directions from Boulder to Lyons
  • CO-93 in both directions from 64th Avenue (Arvada) to CO 170
  • CO-128 in both directions from CO-93 to McCaslin Boulevard

“Winds are contributing to dry conditions and extremely high fire potential, so proper disposal of cigarette butts and securing trailer chains to prevent sparks is mandatory,” reads a message from CDOT, which also addresses wintery weather expected in the mountains. “Snow is expected at pass level along I-70 and the north and north-central mountains by mid-day. Accumulations should be moderate, but snow driven by the high winds may create limited visibility, drifting and possible icing of the road surface.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation has also cautioned about the potential of traffic lights being out due to intentional and unintentional power outages. High-profile vehicles may also risk toppling amid strong winds.

The status of various roadways can be subject to rapid change. Find the most up-to-date information here.
