Man dies after two-vehicle crash in Elbert County
A two-vehicle crash left a man dead and a woman seriously injured in Elbert County on Monday morning.
Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to the crash at 6:36 a.m. along Highway 86 at mile marker 30, located seven miles east of Kiowa in Elbert County, according to a state patrol news release.
Authorities said the crash involved a 1993 Dodge pickup traveling westbound. The pickup drove off the road and hit the drivers side of a 2022 Ford SUV headed eastbound.
The driver of the Dodge pickup, a 45-year-old man, died on-scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford SUV, a 68-year-old woman, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to CSP.
On Monday afternoon, CSP officials said its initial investigation revealed the man wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Authorities also said they found drugs inside the Dodge pickup, but didn’t specify what drugs they found.
The crash resulted in a full closure of Highway 86.
State patrol’s investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
