Nuggets vs. Heat | 3 takeaways from Denver’s depressing loss in Miami

Nothing after halftime mattered Monday in Miami.

Here are three takeaways from Denver’s depressing 147-123 loss on Monday at Kaseya Center:

1. The worst thing Denver could do is let Nikola Jokic’s left knee injury impact Christian Braun, Aaron Gordon and Cam Johnson’s timelines for return. If Jokic is going to miss an extended stretch of the season like Denver’s three other injured starters, patience is going to be tested. Braun and Gordon are closest to a return with the hope being both are back before the end of this road trip. It’s going to be tempting to expedite the process as much as possible with Denver jostling for position in a packed second tier in the Western Conference standings behind the Thunder, but the only way Denver’s chance to win another championship hinges on being as healthy as possible at the end of the season, not playoff position with 50 regular-season games to go.

2. The first round of the All-Star Game fan vote went predictably. Nikola Jokic’s 1.1 million votes rank second in the Western Conference to Lakers guard Luka Doncic, who received 1.2 million votes. Jamal Murray ranked 14th in the conference with more than 130,000 votes. As long as Jokic is healthy, he’s headed to Los Angeles. If Jokic‘s injury is the type to prevent an eighth All-Star appearance, that, unfortunately, helps Murray’s chances to make his first All-Star Game. Murray finished the loss to Miami with 20 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and a steal in 35 minutes of playing time.

3. There were concerning signs even before Jokic got hurt. Denver gave up 41 points in the opening quarter, and points off turnovers continued to plague the Nuggets. Five different players committed a turnover, and Miami turned those into 11 points. Expect Denver’s offense to be even more disjointed for as long as Jokic is unavailable. That makes more sound defense and more reliance on the 3-point shot Denver’s best path forward.

The injury occurred when Spencer Jones inadvertently stepped on Jokic’s left foot in the final seconds of […]
