Broncos QB Bo Nix leads NFL in game-winning drives: ‘Everybody wants to be a clutch player’
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix leads the NFL with seven game-winning drives entering the regular-season finale.
“Everybody wants to be a clutch player,” Nix told reporters Wednesday after practice at Broncos Park.
Denver (13-3) hosts the Chargers (11-5) on Sunday at Empower Field with a chance to clinch the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. The Broncos will have confidence in Nix if the result comes down to a final possession. Just check his resume.
The Broncos trailed late in games this season against the Eagles, Jets, Giants, Chiefs (twice) and Commanders. Nix led Denver to victory in all seven comebacks.
“It’s just all about who wants it at the end of the game,” Nix said. “Who wants football? Who wants to make the play? Who wants to make the block? Who wants to make the tackle on defense? Whatever it may be. It’s just a competitive edge, I think. You’ve just got to want to be in that position. You’ve got to train to be in that position.”
That preparation began during OTAs and training camp with coach Sean Payton regularly simulating end-of-game scenarios, including 2-minute drives.
“We want to be clutch in those situations,” Nix said. “Everybody wants to be a clutch player. Answer the bell … when the game is on the line. You’ve just got to prepare for those moments. You’ve got to put yourself in those situations, and at the end of the day, give yourself a chance to go out there and execute.”
Payton added: “He’s an extremely young, productive (and) successful quarterback. Getting better and leading. He’s all of those things.”
Nix is looking forward to the return of playoff football at Empower Field.
“The last three home games we’ve had have been special atmospheres,” Nix said. “I really want to see it continue to get better and better. We eventually get back to the historical Mile High advantage that’s essentially the toughest place to play in the world. So, I’m excited to see what it’s going to become.”
