Avalanche place Mackenzie Blackwood on injured reserve with lower-body injury
Before the Colorado Avalanche left for Carolina, they delivered unfortunate news.
Mackenzie Blackwood, who stopped 13 of 14 shots in Colorado’s win on Wednesday, was placed on injured reserve on Friday with a lower-body injury. The Avalanche will be on the road until Wednesday with games at Carolina, Florida and Tampa Bay. Blackwood will be reevaluated when they return home.
Because he was placed on injured reserve, he will miss a minimum of seven days, meaning he will be out at least four games. Expect Scott Wedgewood to play most, if not all, of the games in Blackwood’s absence.
Blackwood was on the ice before the Avalanche hitting the road on Thursday but did not take part in the rest of practice. Coach Jared Bednar mentioned earlier this week they were hoping to give Blackwood more starts to get him into rhythm, but this will put a dent in those plans.
In 16 games this season, Blackwood has a record of 13-1-1 and a save percentage of .924. He missed the first month of the season due to a lower-body injury.
In Blackwood’s absence, the Avalanche recalled goaltender Trent Miner. The 24-year-old has appeared in two games this season with the Avalanche and has posted a .909 save percentage. He has a 7-2 record with the Colorado Eagles this season.
Colorado also recalled forward Taylor Makar for the road trip as Gavin Brindley and Joel Kiviranta are both day-to-day with injuries. If neither of them can play, Makar will have to step into the lineup. He has no points in three NHL games this season.
