Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to interview for Titans’ head coach position
Let the Vance Joseph interviews get underway.
A source said Monday the Broncos defensive coordinator will interview this week for the Tennessee Titans head coaching job. Joseph is allowed to have a remote interview this week with the Broncos having earned the No. 1 AFC playoff seed with Sunday’s 19-3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers at Empower Field at Mile High.
Joseph is considered a top candidate to again become a head coach after the Broncos (14-3) this season finished No. 2 in the NFL in total defense and No. 3 in scoring defense. It was their highest ranking in total defense since being No. 1 in 2015, when the Broncos won Super Bowl 50, and just the third time in their history they have been ranked in the top two.
Joseph, 53, previously was a head coach with Denver from 2017-18, going 11-21. He is in his third season as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator under head coach Sean Payton.
The Titans have had an opening for a coach since Brian Callahan was fired in October after a 1-5 start. Senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy finished the season as interim coach, and Tennessee went 3-14.
The Titans requested and received permission from the Broncos to interview Joseph. Teams cannot block assistants from interviewing to be a head coach on another team.
There are six teams that currently have an opening for a head coach. In addition to the Titans, they are the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders.
After the Broncos were No. 3 in the NFL in scoring defense and No. 7 in total defense in 2024, Joseph was interviewed for head positions with the New York Jets and Raiders but wasn’t offered either job.
It has been anticipated all season that Joseph again would receive interest from teams. He addressed the situation on Nov. 27.
“It’s the Broncos’ season right now and that’s my focus honestly,” Joseph said then. “If (becoming a head coach again) happens, I’ll be happy that it happened. If it doesn’t, I have a good job. I have good players. I’m in a great city. So I have no worries honestly.”
Among those who have said Joseph should get another shot as a head coach are former Denver coaches Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips. Joseph has called it “flattering” what those two and others have said in endorsing him.
