Aurora man identified as victim in fatal head-on crash near Silverthorne

A 21-year-old Aurora man was identified as the victim of a head-on crash that took place on U.S. 9 northwest of Silverthorne Tuesday morning.

The man, who was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, was driving northbound on the highway when he lost control and began to drift into the southbound lane just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to a Wednesday news release from Colorado State Patrol.

At that moment, a Ford F350 driven by a 32-year-old Silverthorne man in the southbound lane hit the passenger side of the Dodge, sending both vehicles off the side of the road, according to the release. The crash took place about a dozen miles northwest of Silverthorne.

The Aurora man was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Ford was moderately injured in the crash, according to the release. Officials reopened the highway around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators do not know the cause of the crash at this time. Anyone who witnessed it is asked to contact CSP at 970-249-4392 with case reference number VC260009.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim after it has notified family and performed an autopsy.
