Avalanche set to take on Mammoth outdoors in Utah at 2027 Winter Classic
The Colorado Avalanche are headed outdoors again.
On Wednesday, the NHL announced that the Avalanche will be the opponent for the Utah Mammoth at the 2027 Winter Classic that is set to be played at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on the University of Utah campus. The 18th Winter Classic does not have a set date yet, but it typically takes place on or around New Year’s Day. It will be the 47th outdoor regular-season game in NHL history.
This will be the fourth outdoor game in Avalanche history. They hosted the Stadium Series against the Detroit Red Wings in 2016 at Coors Field and then hosted again against the Los Angeles Kings in 2020 at the Air Force Academy. In 2021, the Avalanche and Golden Knights played at a neutral site outdoors in Lake Tahoe, Calif. Their record in those games is 1-2.
While there is no official nickname for the matchup, it’s clear the NHL is trying to create a Rocky Mountain rivalry between the Avalanche and Mammoth. Since the Mammoth are hovering around a wild-card spot, there’s a chance that the rivalry could be kick-started this spring if the teams meet in the postseason.
“We’re excited and honored that the league selected us for the Winter Classic,” Avalanche president of hockey operations Joe Sakic said in a statement. “The Avalanche organization is always proud to be in consideration for marquee events like this. We’re looking forward to being matched up with a great team and represent the Rocky Mountain region in a game that appeals to these two markets in this part of the country.”
