Denver man dead after car crash ends in South Platte River

A single-car crash into a river near Commerce City killed a Denver man Sunday evening, Colorado State Patrol officials announced Monday.

CSP responded to the crash around 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of East 58th Avenue and York Street near Commerce City, just west of the Suncor Energy facility, according to a CSP news release.

The car’s driver, a 22-year-old Denver man, was removed from the car, which had rolled into the South Platte River, and was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the news release said.

He was the only person in the car, officials said.

According to an initial investigation, he was driving east on East 58th Avenue when the car, a Honda CRV, crossed the westbound lanes and went off the left side of the road. The car hit a wooden post guardrail and kept going off a large embankment.

The front of the car hit the ground east of the intersection and landed in the South Platte on its roof, the release said.

East 58th Avenue was shut down after the crash and reopened just after 9 p.m. Sunday.

CSP is investigating the incident and urged any witnesses who have not spoken to investigators to contact CSP dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case VC260014.
