Broncos elevate TE Caleb Lohner, WR Elijah Moore for playoff game vs. Bills; Jim Leonhard interviews with Jets
The Broncos on Friday elevated rookie tight end Caleb Lohner and veteran wide receiver Elijah Moore from the practice squad for Saturday’s playoff game against Buffalo. But stay tuned to see if either takes the field.
It would be a surprise if Lohner, a seventh-round pick, is active for the divisional round game at Empower Field at Mile High. He hasn’t appeared in a game all season, and the Broncos are at full strength at tight end.
Denver coach Sean Payton often has elevated players from the practice squad as a reward to get a bigger paycheck and then they are inactive for the game.
It remains to be seen whether Moore will be active. The Broncos are at full strength at wide receiver and Moore has not appeared in a game for them since being signed Dec. 2 to the practice squad.
Moore is in his fifth NFL season and started the season with Buffalo. He appeared in nine games and had nine catches for 112 yards before being waived Nov. 26.
Moore told The Denver Gazette on Thursday he has been helping provide the Broncos with tips on the Bills.
“I did all I can in meetings,” Moore said. “They asked me questions. Whatever they asked, I gave it to them.”
The Bills, who have been depleted by injuries at wide receiver, bulked up their corps by activating Curtis Samuel off injured reserve and elevating Mecole Hardman Jr. off the practice squad. Samuel, a nine-year veteran who has four seasons of 50 or more catches, has seven receptions for 81 yards in six games this season. Hardman, a seven-year veteran who has won three Super Bowl rings with Kansas City, didn’t have a catch in two Buffalo regular-season games.
The Bills also activated off injured reserve defensive tackle Ed Oliver, a seven-year veteran who has played in just three games this season. They also elevated off the practice squad rookie running back Frank Gore Jr.
Gore didn’t get into a regular-season game but played four snaps in last Sunday’s 27-24 win at Jacksonville in a wild-card playoff game. He had one catch for six yards.
Leonhard interviews with Jets
The New York Jets announced Friday they interviewed Broncos defensive pass game coordinator and assistant head coach Jim Leonhard for their defensive coordinator opening.
The Jets announced having remote interviews with seven other candidates for the job, including Wink Martindale, Denver’s linebackers coach in 2009 and defensive coordinator in 2010. It is the second known remote interview for Leonhard, who talked last week with Dallas.
Leonhard is in his second season on Payton’s staff. If Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who has been highly courted, takes a job as a head coach, Leonhard could be a candidate to replace him.

German baron to attend playoff game
There will be royalty at Saturday’s game.
Lutz Freiherr Von Entress-Fursteneck, a German baron who lives in Berlin, flew to Denver on Friday and will attend the Broncos’ game against the Bills. The German Lutz is a big fan of Denver kicker Wil Lutz and will be wearing a Broncos jersey with “Lutz” on the back.
The German Lutz told The Denver Gazette in London last fall that he has been a Broncos fan for 35 years, and that the Broncos’ 13-11 win over the New York Jets there on Oct. 12 was the first time he had seen them play in person. While he does have the nobility title of baron in Germany, he stressed then it is not exactly like being a royal in England and that he is a real estate agent.
“It’ll be the first time I see the Broncos in Denver live,’’ he said Friday after his arrival. “Maybe it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch a playoff game in Denver. I’m so excited.”
For a round-trip flight from Berlin leaving Friday morning and returning Monday, he said he spent $1,000. He bought a ticket for the game on the secondary market for $950, including fees, to sit in section 120.
“It’s a playoff game, it’s do or die,’’ he said. “That’s the most important thing. It’s incredible.”
The German Lutz, now 62, received as a gift from his nephew a No. 60 jersey with “Lutz” on the back on his 60th birthday on May 17, 2023. Three months later, the Broncos acquired Lutz the kicker in a trade from New Orleans, and he became the favorite player for the German Lutz. He hopes when in Denver to get a No. 3 jersey, which Lutz wears for the Broncos.
“He’s playing fantastic,’’ said the German Lutz. “I’ll cross my fingers for him (Saturday).”
While his flight back to Berlin is on Monday, the German Lutz said there’s a chance he might stay over or fly back to Denver if the Broncos win and make the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 25. In that case, Saturday’s game might not be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
