Denver coach David Adelman discusses his Bills fandom and Peyton Watson’s star turn | Nuggets notebook

There’s going to be one busy member of Bills Mafia at Ball Arena on Saturday.

Nuggets coach David Adelman will have one eye on Buffalo’s 2:30 p.m. playoff game against the Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High and one eye on his team’s preparation for a 7 p.m. tipoff against the Wizards at Ball Arena.

“I’d love to watch all of it,” Adelman said Friday. “I think it’s going to be a great game. What the Broncos have done this year is so impressive.”

For those wondering how a 44-year-old man who grew up in Oregon became a committed Bills fan, Adelman offered an explanation. It started when he was 7 or 8 years old.

“Jim Kelly, K-Gun (offense), Thurman Thomas, Darryl Talley, Bruce Smith, we could go on and on … Mark Kelso. That team was fun to play Madden with. That team was on at 10 a.m. on the West Coast, so that was my team. That’s been my team through the losing seasons and all of the things,” Adelman said, earning back his Colorado card. “People can say whatever they want. I was there when Josh Allen was not there. I went to Lambeau (Field) and saw them lose (something like) 41-3. I’ve seen it all. I’m a fan.

“They’ve got 20 people (injured) for this game tomorrow. It’s a win-win for me. If the Bills win, I’ll be very excited. If the Broncos win, it’s good for the town, good for the city. It should be a really good matchup.”

Injury updates

Friday’s practice was a light one with another back-to-back coming up this weekend, but there were a few faces back in the fold.

Jonas Valanciunas and DaRon Holmes II played some one-on-one after the formal part of practice concluded. Valanciunas hasn’t played since straining his right calf in Denver’s Dec. 31 game at Toronto.

“It’s very difficult. He’s very good. That’s a starter on every NBA team, basically,” Holmes said. “I’m still learning a lot, but it’s great to be able to get that. It’s only going to make me better for the years to come.”

Valanciunas wore a compression sleeve over his lower right leg at practice, while Christian Braun walked off the court without a brace on his left ankle. After missing nearly two months with an ankle sprain, Braun returned for three games before the Nuggets held him out of the last three games.

“He did a little bit,” Adelman said of Braun’s activity. “Jonas did a little bit. Each guy, it’s going to be their own process. All these weeks and timetables we put out there, I don’t know. They have to feel comfortable in what they’re doing before they start really playing. We’re going to be patient with CB. He’s a huge part of what we do, especially defensively. We’ve missed him dramatically. I’m excited for him to get back to full strength.”

Cam Johnson took the court after practice and did some skill work as part of his return from a bone bruise on his right knee. Nikola Jokic, who reportedly has started on-court work after suffering a bone bruise in his left knee, was not spotted in the gym when the doors were opened to the media.

Jokic, Braun, Johnson and Valanciunas were ruled out of Saturday’s game, while Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Bruce Brown are probable.

Watson’s flowers

Peyton Watson is taking a moment to smell his flowers.

There have been a couple of bouquets to appreciate. Watson recently earned his first Western Conference Player of the Week honor. He also received a shoutout from Kevin Durant on Instagram after joining an elusive club. Watson joined Durant and Kobe Bryant, his two favorite players growing up, as the only players to post more than 125 points, 15 combined steals and blocks and 15 made 3-pointers while shooting 60% from 3-point range over a five-game span since the 2001-02 season. Watson grew up in the Los Angeles area looking up to Bryant and used Kevin Durant as a blueprint of how to be effective at the highest level despite his slight frame.

“You got to smell your flowers while they’re there. That’s definitely something in this business that’s hard to do, because we play so much,” Watson said.

“We don’t take those moments for granted.”

Watson’s play during Denver’s injury-decimated stretch has given his coach something else to consider moving forward.

“We have to take a long look at what he can do in pick-and-roll situations, things we run for other guys,” Adelman said.

“The proudest I am of Peyton is that he’s done this in the flow. It hasn’t been like I’m just loading him up with plays. He’s creating offense for himself and for other people on his own. There’s a balance to it. We play the way we play regardless. I think he’s doing a good job of staying within that, while being aggressive and taking steps in his overall game.”
