FBI arrests Colorado bank robbery book author for bank robbery

It’s a story that writes itself; in fact, it was one he had already written.

Charles Martinez, 48, a man who documented his experience as a bank robber and member of a prison gang in the book “The Life of an Outlaw,” was arrested by the FBI on Jan. 8 in connection with a Denver bank robbery, according to a social media post from the agency.

Martinez, captured on surveillance footage wearing an orange construction jacket and a grey beanie, allegedly robbed a U.S. Bank location in the 700 block of Colorado Boulevard at around 9:40 a.m. on Jan. 5, according to the post. During the robbery, authorities said, he demanded money from the teller before running away in an eastward direction.

An FBI official confirmed Tuesday that Martinez was the same man who authored the 2018 book, a memoir that detailed his involvement in crime, the federal prison system and his gang affiliations. He pleaded guilty to five robberies in April 1999.

The federal charges against Martinez will not be public until he makes his first appearance in federal court, which will only happen after he is transferred from Denver, the official said. There is currently no timetable for that transfer.

On Amazon, the book is described as: “The true story of a bank robber paying his debt to society in some of the most ruthless and bloody prisons the American Justice system has to offer. Choosing to join the notorious prison gang Sureno’s and run under the Mexican Mafia to survive in the dog eat dog world of the Federal Bureau Of Prisons.”

If convicted, he will likely be headed back to prison.
