What to expect as Denver braces for arctic blast this weekend
Frigid temperatures are expected to move into the Denver area over the next few days, bringing dangerously cold conditions and light snow.
Thursday will be the last day above freezing until Monday, as the National Weather Service in Boulder said to expect a high of 37 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
Here’s what to expect this weekend.
Cold front moves in Thursday night
Denver should brace for cold temperatures as the low Thursday night into Friday is expected to fall to 8 degrees, the weather service predicts.
“All of that cold air comes in tonight,” Zach Hiris, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder told The Denver Gazette in a phone call. “Friday, we’re really only expecting to get into the low 20s.”
Hiris said the extreme cold is due to an arctic strong low-pressure system coming in from Canada, and fortunately for Denverites, the Mile High City is on the edge of the system or the forecast could be even colder.
“A lot of that cold air is going to push back into the Midwest,” Hiris said, adding that wind chills could drop to -35 to -50 degrees in parts of the Midwest.
Denver snow forecast Friday
The weather service forecasts the temperature at Denver International Airport to only reach 21 degrees Friday with a 50% chance of snow during the day, increasing to a 70% chance of snow overnight.
“There’s not a whole lot of moisture on this side of the low-pressure system,” Hiris said, adding that Denver could see 1-2 inches of snowfall accumulation overall by Saturday.
Mountains along the Interstate 70 corridor could see 4-10 inches of snow, Hiris said.
Coldest temperatures expected Saturday
Saturday will be the coldest day associated with this cold front as temperatures plummet to a low of 1 degree overnight Friday into Saturday and are only expected to reach a high of 12 degrees on Saturday with a 60% chance of snow.
The record cold temperature in Denver for Jan. 24 is -18 and the record for the coldest high temperature that day is -4, both set in 1872, so neither of those marks appears to be in jeopardy Saturday.
“It looks like that was a really cold day back in 1872,” Hiris said.
Temperatures are expected to fall to 1 degree overnight Saturday into Sunday, the weather service said.
Denver Broncos game forecast
The sun returns and temperatures in Denver will gradually start to warm back up on Sunday, but the high is only expected to reach 21 degrees, the weather service predicts.
The Denver Broncos will take on the New England Patriots on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Empower Field at Mile High, which means about 76,000 Denverites will be braving the frigid conditions.
“On the bright side, they’re going to going out on the peak side of the warming up on Sunday,” Hiris said. “If you’ve got outdoor plans this weekend, it hasn’t been this cold in quite a while, so make sure you wear a couple extra layers to keep warm and hopefully cheer on some good sports while you’re out there.”
Denver will finally start to thaw on Monday, the weather service said, as temperatures are expected to climb back up to 46 degrees for a high under sunny skies.
