Brighton police lift shelter-in-place order

Brighton police have lifted a shelter-in-place order that shut down a street in the town Monday morning.

Beldock Street was closed between Chavez and Sandoval streets during the incident, the Brighton Police Department said on its official Facebook page.

Residents were told to avoid the area during the shutdown.

The incident started as a domestic violence call at about 8:20 p.m. Sunday, according to a BPD press release.

Polce were told a man had fired a weapon in the house near Beldock and Chavez streets.

As officers from the combined Brighton-Commerce City SWAT attempted to talk to the man, “the suspect fired several shots at officers,” according to the release. They did not return fire, nor were any officers injured.

The standoff continued for several more hours, before officers entered the house and found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

The Adams County Coroner will identify the man pending an autopsy and notification of relatives.
