DA charges 3 suspects in fatal Thornton burglary attempt

The Adams County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against three suspects in connection to a burglary attempt that ended with a fourth suspect being shot to death.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office filed burglary and crime of violence charges against 28-year-old Richard Hernandez and 36-year-old Leo Bonavich on Monday. The attorney’s office also charged 43-year-old Vincent Rios with special offender and intent to distribute drug counts in connection to the burglary and shooting that occurred in January.

Thornton Police Department officers first responded to a home in the 9600 block of Huron Street around 4:30 a.m. Jan. 14 on reports of a shooting, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, police saw the reported vehicle leaving the area and began chasing it. The pursuit eventually ended in the intersection of West 56th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

A 35-year-old man was found at the home with minor gunshot wounds, police said. The suspect vehicle had four people inside, including a man who was found dead with gunshot wounds.

Preliminary investigations found that the suspects allegedly tried to break in to the residence, resulting in a confrontation. Gunshots were fired between the residents and suspects.

The 35-year-old man was not arrested in connection to the suspect’s death, police said.

“Based on the available evidence and the applicable law, there is insufficient evidence to support criminal charges related to the homicide,” the department told The Denver Gazette Monday.

Meanwhile, the suspects are scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 12.
