Gabriel Landeskog ‘pretty confident’ he’ll return from injury to represent Sweden at Olympics

Gabriel Landeskog did not play for the Avalanche on Wednesday night.

But it sounds like he’ll play for Team Sweden when NHL players hit the ice next week at Italy’s Winter Olympics.

“I’m pretty confident (I’ll be ready),” Landeskog said Wednesday after a pregame skate at Ball Arena. “I feel good.”

Landeskog said he was hoping he’d be able to get into some games with the Avalanche prior to the Olympics break. It didn’t work out that way.

Just a few weeks ago, Landeskog wasn’t sure the Olympics would even be an option, as his initial recovery was very slow after he was injured Jan. 4 in Florida. He began to progress about two weeks after the injury.

While Avalanche fans are concerned about his health and the fact he will likely be playing his first game back from injury in a jersey that isn’t burgundy and blue, Landeskog is not.

“It’ll be really good — once I get over there — to get some really good, hard practices in with the team,” he said. “Then when I feel like I’m good to go, then I’m good to go. …. I would have liked to be back two weeks ago, but there’s only so much you can do. You try your best, and then you get back when you get back. (There is) no frustration. I’m just excited to go and glad to be in this position.”

While Landeskog didn’t confirm where he was injured, he did say it was “pretty evident what body part was injured in that crash.” The Avalanche have described it as an upper-body injury. Given what part of his body went full speed into the goal post that evening in Florida, it’s likely a rib injury.

In 41 games with Landeskog in the lineup, the Avalanche are 31-3-7. The 33-year-old winger has seven goals and 22 points in those 41 games. The injury came at a bad time. Landeskog was starting to heat up offensively. In his six games prior to going down with an injury, Landeskog picked up six points.

Mark Kiszla: In a nation divided, can Olympics give love for the U-S-A a chance?

MILAN, Italy — Is it hopelessly naive to think five Olympic rings can bind 345 million American hearts in our bickering nation? When we stand to shout U-S-A! during the Winter Games, can it unite us in red, white and blue pride, or does the chant now ring hollow? “I’m incredibly proud to be here […]
