Avalanche at the Olympics: Will Landeskog play in Sweden’s first game?

The men’s hockey portion of the Winter Olympics gets underway in Milan on Wednesday with a few games that could intrigue Avalanche fans, who can choose among eight of their players at these Games:

Slovakia vs. Finland: 8:40 a.m. (USA Network)

Avalanche winger Artturi Lehkonen is expected to play an important role on Team Finland. During the team’s first practice session, Lehkonen was slotted at left wing on their second line alongside Carolina’s Sebastian Aho and Chicago’s Teuvo Teravainen, according to reports. Although it’s bound to happen at some point, it doesn’t look like he’ll be reunited immediately with former linemate Mikko Rantanen, who will play big minutes for Finland.

Joel Kiviranta was an extra during Finland’s line rushes, so there’s no guarantee he will play on Wednesday.

Sweden vs. Italy: 1:10 p.m. (USA Network)

All signs point to Gabriel Landeskog playing his first hockey game since Jan. 4. It just won’t be in an Avalanche uniform.

Sweden’s captain has lined up at practice on the fourth line next to San Jose’s Alex Wennberg and New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt, according to reports. If it’s a way to ease Landeskog back into a hockey game, it’s as good a fit as any. It also wouldn’t be a surprise if Landeskog saw special teams time either on the power play or penalty kill.

The remainder of the Avalanche players in the tournament won’t hit the ice until Thursday.
