13-year-old dies in Canada after hoodie gets caught on ski lift
Another tragic ski lift-related death has occurred, and much like one that recently took place in Japan involving a 22-year-old snowboarder whose backpack got caught on a lift, this one involves another common item getting snagged and a fatality occurring as a result.
According to a report from The Canadian Press, a 13-year-old girl has died after sustaining a serious injury at Centre Vorlage on February 11. The Montreal Gazette reports that the girl’s hoodie got tangled in a chairlift’s pull device, resulting in the girl being unable to breath. Similar to the incident that recently took place in Japan, the girl was raised off of the ground by the lift that trapped her.
The Centre Vorlage ski area, which is located about 18 miles northwest of Ottawa, closed after the incident. It started to reopen skiing operations on February 17.
While deaths of this nature are rare, both this death and the one that occurred in Japan highlight the importance of being aware of where gear is at when getting off of a lift. Wearing loose clothing or gear with dangling straps can pose potential snag risks.
Condolences go out to those impacted by both this death and the one that occurred days prior in Japan.
