Colorado to Italy: Colorado Springs-based figure skater Amber Glenn endures short-program disappointment

Tracking Coloradans in the Winter Olympics

Colorado Springs-based figure skater Amber Glenn failed to complete her triple loop in Tuesday’s short program, with judges ruling it an invalid element, and she slid to 13th place.

Glenn did qualify for Thursday’s free skate with her score of 67.39 but is now a long shot to reach the podium.

Alysa Liu, who previously trained in Colorado Springs, is in third place in the competition behind Japanese skaters Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto.

Niklas Malacinski (Steamboat Springs) finished 13th in the Nordic combined, an event that combined ski jumping and a 10-kilometer cross-country competition.

The 22-year-old who competed in track and field for Steamboat Springs High School, placed 12th in ski jump with 129.9 points and was 13th in the cross-country race in 27:07.04.

The next-closest American in the competition was Benjamin Loomis in 27th.

Mikaela Shiffrin (Edwards) will attempt to break an eight-year medals drought in her best event, the alpine skiing women’s slalom, at 2 a.m. Wednesday.

 – The men’s snowboard slopestyle was rescheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday because of weather, delaying 17-year-old Wolcott native Oliver Martin’s quest for his first Olympic medal.
