RMNP announces temporary closures to protect nesting raptors
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has announced that temporary raptor closures are now in effect.
Each year, RMNP officials initiate temporary closures in specific areas of the park to allow birds of prey to nest undisturbed. The closures will remain in place through July 31, but might be extended or rescinded depending on nesting activity.
The Lumpy Ridge area of RMNP, The Book, Bookmark, Bookmark Pinnacle, Left Book, Twin Owls, Rock One, Thunder Buttress, The Needle, and The Parish are closed to all uses. The closures include the trails around the base of these formations, all climbing routes, outcroppings, cliffs, faces, ascent routes, and descent routes.
The closures will be monitored throughout the spring and early summer. If human activity on any open trails impacts breeding activity, the routes might be subject to closure.
If any visitors in RMNP experience aggressive behaviors from birds of prey, have questions about closures, or want to be involved in raptor monitoring, they should email [email protected].
