Official dates for Boulder’s first Sundance Film Festival are here

The Sundance Film Festival will run from Jan. 21 to Jan. 31 when it comes to Boulder next year, the premier independent film festival announced Tuesday.

The internationally-recognized film festival had been in Park City, Utah, for more than 40 years, but organizers chose Boulder to host the festival for the next decade citing its vibrant arts and technology community.

The Flatirons would also make a stunning backdrop, festival organizers said.

“Working closely with the Colorado community, the 2027 Sundance Film Festival is already in our sights as we build towards an exciting debut in Boulder, where our programming will meet audiences next January,” said Eugene Hernandez, Sundance Film Festival’s director, in a news release.

Festival organizers also revealed its official venues where it will host movie screenings and special events.

Most of the venues are based near downtown Boulder and University Hill.

The venues include Boedecker Theater, Boulder Theater, Boulder High School Auditorium, Casey Middle School Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Cinemark Century Boulder, eTown Hall and Gordon Gamm Theater. The festival will also have several venues at the University of Colorado Boulder such as the Macky Auditorium Concert Hall, Muenzinger Auditorium and Roe Green Theatre.

The festival will host talks, panels and other events at the Dairy Arts Center, the Brooklyn Public Library’s Canyon Theater, eTown Hall and Old Main at CU Boulder.

It will be an awesome opportunity for college students to experience Sundance and learn about other points of view, said CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz in a news release.

“It is another opportunity for everyone across the country and around the globe to see how amazing CU Boulder is,” he said. “But I’m also excited to see how our students, who are so creative, leverage the opportunity in ways that I can’t even imagine.”

The Sundance Film Festival had its last hurrah and said goodbye to Utah last month, which featured the premieres of Charlie XCX’s satirical movie The Moment, a documentary on Brittney Griner’s release from Russian detention and The Gallerist starring Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.

The festival will announce more details about its Boulder debut in the coming months, Hernandez said.

The festival founded by the late actor Robert Redford is expected to be a huge boon to Colorado’s economy — typically held in January and heavily tied with the ski industry — as the festival contributed more than $130 million in economic impact to Utah and created more than 1,700 jobs in 2024, according to the organization.

Colorado expects to generate $2 billion over the 10 years as host, supporting both the tourism and creative industries, Gov. Jared Polis said last year.
