Weather mapping service Pivotal Weather has been showing a shocking forecast for the City of Denver in recent days, calling for significant snow accumulation by mid-March. Amid a year of above-average temperatures and a lack of snow in the Mile High City, this prediction is sure to turn heads.

Note from the Author: Before digging into this snowfall forecast map, it’s crucial to note that this weather is still days away and forecasts vary. For example, AccuWeather is calling for temperatures to be a bit warmer in Denver during the period mentioned below – too warm for snowfall that’s this significant to take place. Take this report with a grain of salt and stay tuned for additional updates as this storm approaches.

On February 25, mapping from Pivotal Weather showed that Denver could get 12 inches of snow from 5 p.m. on March 5 through 5 p.m. on March 6. Snow at this level would certainly be the biggest storm of this year, though it wouldn’t even crack the top 10 in terms of historical single-day (or 24-hour) snowfalls in the Mile High City – and keep in mind that of the top 10 single-day snowfall periods (and remember, this storm would technically be spanning two dates), four of those days were in March (22.9 inches on March 18, 2003; 19.9 inches on March 14, 2021; 18 inches on March 5, 1983; and 17.3 inches on March 21, 1944). That said, 12 inches of snow over 24 hours would still be quite notable and sure to bring plenty of travel impacts; granted, on a year like this, a forecast like this can still feel outlandish.

Come February 26, however, Pivotal Weather is already calling for this storm to extend past 24 hours, now expected to drop about 10 inches of snow in Denver between March 6 and then end of March 8 – less intense snowfall, but still a lot of snow.

Extend that date range through the end of March 12 and Pivotal Weather is calling for the city to get 14.1 inches of snow between the March 5 and March 12.

Obviously, this forecast is looking at snowfall that’s more than a week out so a lot can change. Plus, as far as some other forecasting services are concerned, snowfall might not happen at all. Take the AccuWeather daily forecast, for example. It’s calling for basically no snow in Denver and daily highs in the 50s and 60s during this period. As far as historical norms go, a storm of this nature in March wouldn’t be too rare – March tends to be the snowiest month of the year for the Mile High City, followed by April.

Will this big snow end up hitting Denver? Will any snow hit? We’ll have to wait and see. Look for updates as this storm cycle approaches.
