28-foot-long, 8,000-pound potato making its way through Colorado on national tour
You’ve heard about Oscar Meyer’s Wienermobile, but have you heard about the massive Idaho potato truck? It’s in Colorado at last report, towing a potato that weighs 8,000 pounds.
Part of ‘The Famous Idaho Potato Tour,’ which has taken place more than a dozen times, the truck aims to pass through all 50 states and its latest stop is in Colorado – Colorado Springs, to be exact – per the potato tracker website.
Is the potato real? Of course not. The Guinness World Record for largest potato is 10 pounds 15 ounces. That said, this fiberglass creation is sure to be a spectacle, too. Stretching 28 feet long and 11.5 feet tall, it’s actually the 2.0 version – the original weighed six tons, but this one with its smaller size is able to travel more places.
The potato tour is hosted by the Idaho Potato Commission, involving a 72-foot-long semi truck hauling the massive spud on the cross-country trip. According to a website dedicated to the endeavor, a potato of this size would take 7,000 years to grow and could be used to create 20,217 servings of mashed potatoes or 1,000,000 average-sized French fries. That’s not too surprising given that it weighs as much as roughly 21,562 standard potatoes.
The potato’s purpose? To promote the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association certified Idaho potato and to help small charities along the way.
Want a chance to get a picture with this spud? It’s scheduled to be at the Texas Roadhouse in Colorado Springs (595 S. 8th St.) on March 6, per the tour schedule, and after that, it’ll be headed to Boise, Idaho and then to Atlanta, Georgia. Per the website, the potato can be tracked here.
