Who completes pitching rotation as Rockies enter final week of spring training? | Kevin’s take

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — One week remains in Rockies spring training, and there are many questions for Colorado still to answer in a short amount of time.

After an off day Monday, personnel tweaks begin that will eventually shape the final roster going to south Florida for the season opener against the Miami Marlins on March 27.

On the surface, finalizing the roster would seem to be at the top of manager Warren Schaeffer’s to-do list. However, he said Sunday there is something more granular he is looking to accomplish before the Rockies take the field for the final time this spring in Scottsdale on March 24.

“As far as our focus, it is just solidifying who we are, our style of play and gearing it up,” Schaeffer said after the Rockies dropped a 6-5 decision to the Los Angeles Angels in Tempe. “It’s about taking that next jump up toward the regular season. It’s about taking all the stuff that we’ve been doing and just pushing forward.”

Part of that “stuff” includes being more aggressive on the bases. That was on display against the Angels as the Rockies stole a spring-high six bases, including a pair from outfielder Jake McCarthy from the leadoff spot.

“I think it’s sort of becoming our team’s identity,” McCarthy said of pushing the envelope on the bases. “We have a lot of guys who run the bases hard and work to get into scoring position.”

McCarthy, brought over in an offseason trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, will play a big role in Colorado’s fortunes and could serve as a top-of-the-order offensive catalyst if Schaeffer continues to use him in the leadoff spot.

Lineup decisions, however, can wait. For now, it’s about roster battles and who may grab an advantage over the final few days of spring training.

Rotation

Four of the five starting spots for the Rockies appear set with Kyle Freeland, Michael Lorenzen, Jose Quintana and Tomoyuki Sugano bringing veteran arms to the rotation. The fifth spot, however, is still very much up in the air with Chase Dollander, Ryan Feltner, Tanner Gordon and Antonio Senzatela in the mix.

Gordon’s stock has risen dramatically this spring through his four appearances (three starts). Including a four-inning, one-run outing against the Angels on Sunday, Gordon’s spring ERA stands at 1.64 through 11 innings of work. He has also struck out 12 while walking just two.

“It’s the cliché of just controlling what I control,” Gordon said after Sunday’s start. “It’s not up to me who makes the roster, but I’m going to go out there and do the best that I can to make them have a hard decision.”

First base

TJ Rumfield, acquired from the New York Yankees in exchange for reliever Angel Chivilli on Jan. 28, has impressed with his glove and bat in his first Rockies spring. He enters Tuesday with a team-leading four homers and 10 RBIs while his 1.099 OPS is third on the team among players with 30 or more spring at-bats.

While Rockies fans may be clamoring for the Charlie Condon era to begin in Denver (and his .371 batting average and three homers this spring are enough to whet any fan’s appetite), he could start the season in Triple-A, giving Rumfield the opening needed to be the team’s Opening Day first baseman.

Rumfield has started a team-high 10 games for the Rockies at first base this spring, a subtle nod to what may be a regular-season pattern at the position.

Second base

While Rumfield’s 10 starts may be a preview of what is to come, the opposite may be the case at second base, where Adael Amador leads the team with nine starts at the position.

However, Amador’s amount of playing time there comes in the wake of both Edouard Julien and Willi Castro spending time playing for Canada and Puerto Rico, respectively, in the World Baseball Classic. Additionally, Tyler Freeman, who will see time at second base as well as the outfield this season, battled a low back strain early in spring that kept him off the field.

Expect a mix of Castro, Julien and Freeman at the position to open the season while Amador begins the year at Triple-A.

Final bench spots

After starting 30 games at shortstop and 28 games at second base last season, Ryan Ritter has spent time in the outfield to add to his positional flexibility. That, plus a spring that has seen him lead the team with 15 hits, could well earn him the final spot on the 26-man roster.

Will Braxton Fulford or Brett Sullivan serve as the backup catcher? Fulford has experience in the Rockies system, but Sullivan has brought a veteran presence this spring and the 32-year-old is hitting .414. His 12 hits are tied for fourth-most on the team.
