Denver weather: Fire conditions ‘critical’ as temperature climbs

As the temperature continues to near record-breaking highs, the wind continues to howl, bringing with it another Red Flag Warning.

The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Denver area and Front Range, as well as the northeast corner of the state up to the Wyoming border. The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“Elevated to critical fire conditions will be in place today with the most critical areas from Denver to Akron northward,” the weather service said.

With a forecasted high of 80 degrees, the Denver area is just two degrees off the all-time record for March 18.

The unusually warm temperatures, combined with the low humidity and aggressive winds of up to 22 mph, make ideal conditions for quick burns and rapid spreads.

“Avoid outdoor burning and any activity that may produce a spark and start a wildfire,” said the weather service.

As it stands right now, Wednesday is the only forecasted Red Flag Warning for the rest of the week. However, with record-high temperatures incoming, residents should remain fire-conscious.

Colorado is “likely” to hit record highs the rest of the week, with temperatures touching the 90s, according to the National Weather Service.
