Colorado tries to lure 2 manufacturers with $3.6M in tax incentives

The Colorado Economic Development Commission approved more than $3.6 million in job growth tax incentives for two manufacturing companies considering expansions in the metro Denver area and northern Colorado on Thursday.

Commissioners awarded the largest incentive package, valued at $2.5 million, to a medical device manufacturer dubbed “Project Rhein.” The EDC doesn’t disclose company names to protect the confidentiality of businesses that may be considering incentives from states Colorado is competing against.

Project Rhein, which specializes in diagnostic and therapeutic devices, is looking to set up a location in the U.S. in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona or Texas, according to the EDC. If it chooses Colorado, it wants to expand in Boulder or Weld County.

The company has 200 employees and already has a presence in Colorado with 120 workers, the EDC said.

The expansion set to increase the company’s manufacturing abilities would create 190 new jobs for the state over eight years. The average wage would be $107,000 as the company hires assembly operators, inspectors, engineers and technicians.

The other tax incentive was awarded to a company based in Denmark with the code name “Project Hedge.” The company is a manufacturer of products for the aerospace, energy and defense industries.

It would receive more than $1 million in job growth incentive tax credits if it brings the state 82 new jobs over an eight-year period.

It’s interested in expanding to Larimer County, according to the EDC. The company is also considering California and Arizona. The company has 220 employees. One worker is based in Colorado and the Danish manufacturer has a “small sales presence in Colorado,” the EDC said in a media release.

The state’s economic officials hope these two companies will help Colorado add new jobs in manufacturing along the Front Range to support the supply chain across the aerospace, energy, defense, medical and biosciences industries.
