Denver police used surveillance video to tie man to Tuesday shooting

Denver police arrested a man Wednesday after using surveillance footage to tie him and his car to a fatal shooting.

Lavon Ellis Wedgeworth, 44, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with a fatal shooting midday Tuesday in the 12400 block of East 42nd Avenue, near the Interstate 70 exit at Peoria Street. Denver Police Department officers arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound next to a running car. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead just after noon, according to an arrest affidavit.

The Denver Medical Examiner has yet to identify the victim.

Police viewed surveillance footage, which showed the suspect’s car overtaking the victim’s vehicle and forcing it to the side of the road prior to the shooting, the affidavit said.

Police later located the suspect vehicle in the 14500 block of East 46th Avenue around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle was towed to the Denver police crime lab, and identified as being registered to Wedgeworth.

Police obtained a search warrant for the car on Wednesday morning and searched it, finding a fired bullet cartridge, as well as live ammunition, loaded magazines, three handguns and blood on the inside and outside of the car.

Police also received an anonymous tip that included a video of the shooting showing Wedgeworth and another person fighting with the victim before they separated and Wedgeworth pulled a gun and shot the victim three times before leaving the scene, the affidavit said.

Denver jail records show Wedgeworth remained in jail Thursday. No bond has been set.
