Centennial man convicted of sexually abusing stepdaughter on the run
A Centennial man is on the run from authorities after he stopped showing up to his trial ahead of being convicted for sexually abusing his stepdaughter.
Jose Del Carmen Garcia Martinez, 62, was found guilty Thursday by an Arapahoe County jury of sexually assaulting his 15-year-old stepdaughter, who has disabilities, according to a news release from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
He showed up for the first day of his trial on Tuesday but then stopped appearing after the second day, the release said.
Despite his absence, Garcia Martinez was found guilty on two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust as a pattern of abuse and one count of unlawful sexual contact of an at-risk child, which are all class 3 felonies.
Martinez was initially arrested on Aug. 5 after the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a sexual assault inside a home in the 5100 block of South Truckee Street. The victim’s mother called police after the grandmother of the victim walked into the master bedroom closet and witnessed Garcia Martinez sexually assaulting the girl.
Investigators also learned the girl had reported a similar incident to her mother two years prior, but that incident was never reported to police, the release said.
Garcia Martinez was released on a $50,000 bond following his arrest. He is now considered a wanted fugitive, and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office at (720) 874-8477.
