Man arrested in Lakewood for allegedly murdering brother in New Mexico

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of a man suspected of murdering his brother in New Mexico.

Jaime Gilbert Martinez, 33, faces first-degree murder and tampering with evidence charges in connection with the homicide of his 31-year-old brother, Elijah Martinez, in Sapello, N.M., according to a Monday news release from CBI.

New Mexico State Police first responded to the report of a dead man just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday and identified Elijah Martinez, according to the release. Evidence at the scene indicated he was a victim of a homicide.

Investigators then determined that the suspect, Jaime Martinez, had traveled to the Denver metro area and contacted CBI agents, who found the man at a home in Lakewood, according to the release.

Jaime Martinez was arrested Sunday after a “prolonged standoff” with authorities from a slew of different agencies, including CBI, the Lakewood Police Department, the Wheat Ridge Police Department, Colorado State Patrol and West Metro SWAT, according to authorities. He is being held in Colorado pending extradition to New Mexico.
