Colorado school district cancels classes ahead of teacher strike

Sheridan schools will be closed through the end of the week as teachers begin striking on Wednesday.

SHERIDAN — A Denver metro area school district announced it is canceling school for the rest of the week as teachers in the district hit the picket lines.

Sheridan School District 2 said there will be no classes beginning Wednesday due to “current and anticipated staff absences.” The district said they will not be staffed well enough for normal school operations.

Members of the Sheridan Education Association voted to strike earlier in March after contract negotiations could not be resolved. The teachers’ contract with the district lapsed last summer. Union leaders told 9NEWS last week they are pushing for more transparency from the district, particularly when it comes to school calendars and employee pay.

In a statement posted to the district’s website Tuesday, the district said in part, “Sheridan School District 2 remains committed to working in good faith with SEA to reach an agreement that supports our students, values our educators, and is fiscally responsible to our community.”
