Illegal fires and damage at popular trailheads under investigation in Summit County

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of illegal bonfires that have been started in the area of French Gulch and the Reiling Dredge trailheads – a popular spot for outdoor recreation found east of downtown Breckenridge near Country Boy Mine.

According to a report on the matter, fires and camping are not permitted on this land, which is property of Summit County Open Space.

The fires were reportedly fueled with old pallets, which resulted in nails, debris, and litter being left behind, along with damage in parking areas.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Summit County’s non-emergency dispatch at 970-668-8600.
