Driver crashes, flees scene after traveling down bike path at high speed in Colorado mountain town
A lane of eastbound I-70 was temporarily closed in the area of Idaho Springs on April 8 after a vehicle struck a berm and crashed. The vehicle, however, wasn’t traveling along I-70 when the crash occurred, but on the Greenway bike path that runs along the road on the other side of the guardrail.
According to a report on the matter from the Idaho Springs Police Department, the driver of the involved vehicle was traveling along the bike path at a high rate of speed at about 2:45 p.m. when he struck the berm. Images from the scene appear to show that the vehicle ended up traveling downslope from the path. After the crash, the driver reportedly attempted to flee the scene on foot, running an estimated 300 yards downhill into a creek.
Authorities believe the driver was under the influence of an unknown substance when the crash occurred. At last report, contact was made with the driver and he was set to be transported to the Denver metro area with unknown injuries.
The lane of I-70 that was impacted has since been reopened.
“We are grateful no one else was injured and that no one was traveling on the bike path at the time of the incident,” wrote the Idaho Springs Police Department of the matter.
All suspects are to be considered innocent of any charges that may stem from this incident until proven guilty in a court of law.
