Denver weather: Warm Thursday before massive temperature drop, snow

Enjoy the warm conditions in Denver on Thursday because meteorologists said a massive temperature drop is expected overnight into Friday and could cause issues for plants and irrigation lines.

The National Weather Service in Boulder said to expect a high of 75 degrees in Denver on Thursday. That’s about 14 degrees warmer than the average high for April 16 in Denver, according to weather service archive data.

However, that is expected to plummet to 34 degrees overnight into Friday and temperatures will only climb to 39 degrees for a high on Friday, the weather service said. Then, overnight into Saturday morning, the temperature is expected to drop to 24 degrees, which is about 10 degrees colder than the average low for this time of year, according to weather service records.

9NEWS meteorologist Chris Bianchi said to expect to see snowflakes during the Friday morning commute. Snowfall is likely in Denver by noon on Friday, he added, but the biggest impacts will come Saturday morning.

“During the day on Friday, because it’s so warm on Thursday, the ground will be warm, so the roads will be mainly wet on Friday,” Bianchi said in a video posted to his Instagram account. “But then by Friday night and Saturday morning, that’s when those wet roads will turn icy, and we’ll see black ice probably by Saturday morning, especially before sunrise on Saturday.”

The National Weather Service said the chance of precipitation on Friday is 80%, but less than an inch of snow is expected to stick.

A Hard Freeze Watch has been issued by the weather service for Friday night into Saturday morning for Colorado’s Interstate 25 urban corridor and Eastern Plains.

“If not drained or protected, damage to above-ground irrigation lines will likely occur,” the weather service warned. “A hard freeze could kill sensitive vegetation and damage fruit trees.”

The weather service said to take steps now to protect tender plants from the incoming cold front, such as covering them or bringing them inside if possible.
