Man dies after he was placed into protective custody by Westminster police
A man died early Wednesday after Westminster police placed him into protective custody.
Westminster Police Department officers responded just after 3:30 a.m. after family members of the man called 911 to report that he was undergoing a mental health crisis, according to a news release. Upon officers’ arrival, they located the 23-year-old man, who police said had access to “harmful substances,” and was attempting to harm himself.
Officers placed the man into protective custody and he was transported to a hospital. He was later pronounced deceased, police said. The release from the department did not specify how he is believed to have died.
The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response team is investigating, police said. The two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, police said.
The man was not identified by police. The Adams County Coroner will release his name and cause of death, pending an autopsy and family notification.
