History of the park:

Homesteaders began to build ranches and farms, small businesses, sawmills, and logging operations near Eldorado Canyon in 1858. In 1902, the federal government granted Union Pacific land in the area to construct a railroad. What was once the Moffat Road rail line still operates today as the Denver & Rio Grande route from Denver west to Winter Park and beyond. After becoming a private club briefly in the 1960s, it was reopened to the public. The State of Colorado bought the canyon in 1978, and Eldorado Canyon State Park was created.

What recreation it’s known for:

Eldorado Canyon is known as one of the best climbing destinations in the U.S. The park has more than 500 technical climbing routes that attract climbers from around the world. According to CPW, Eldorado is known for multi-pitch, traditionally protected sandstone rock climbs on cliffs up to 700 feet high.
