Fire in Las Animas County burns over 2,000 acres
Firefighters are working on a fire that has already burned over 2,000 acres in Las Animas County.
The fire broke out on Friday in Poitrey Canyon, which is just northwest of the town of Kim. In a Facebook post, Kim said that multiple agencies were responding and that the fire was started by individuals doing some “grinding work.”
As of Sunday the fire is at 2,065 acres and 0% containment, according to Watch Duty.
The fire prompted Governor Jared Polis to verbally declare a disaster emergency on Saturday. The declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Fire Prevention and Control to “take responsibility for all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts on the Poitrey Canyon Fire.”
In an update on Sunday morning, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control said that although the cooler weather on Saturday helped moderate fire behavior, it is still 0% contained. More resources are enroute to help with the fire.
