Harvey Gap State Park: Find beaches, picnic spots, boating, and more at this hidden gem

Harvey Gap State Park is known for its clean water and shaded picnic sites, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Visitors can enjoy hiking, boating, swimming, and picnicking at the lake, and even cross-country ski or ice fish in the winter. The park is also bordered by the Grand Hogback, the ridge that marks the edge of the Rocky Mountains on the south end of the reservoir.

History of the park:

According to the Colorado Department of Education, Colorado Parks and Wildlife started managing recreational opportunities at Harvey Gap State Park in 1987.

What recreation it’s known for:

The 190-surface-acre Harvey Gap reservoir is the main draw to this park. According to CPW, it’s a popular fishing destination, offering boating with small boats (20 horsepower max) and a swim beach. The reservoir is open to boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, and sailing.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Silt-Rifle by IHG – located near the park, this is a convenient basecamp for your adventures at Harvey Gap.

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Rifle – located in nearby Rifle, this is another simple option.

Nearby camping – if you have your heart set on camping, nearby Rifle Gap State Park and Rifle Falls State Park offer great camping options.

Other things to know:

Water skiing is not allowed at Harvey Gap Reservoir.

The swim beach parking lot will be closed until June 2026 for construction. No vehicles or foot traffic are allowed in the area during construction. Parking is not allowed along Harvey Gap Road (County Road 237). Find more information here.
