14 stunning scenic drives that deliver big on summer views in Colorado

In many places around the globe, the trip between two spots isn’t much more than a task that must be completed to get from point A to point B. That’s not the case in Colorado, with the many roads that pass through the state often offering stunning views, an opportunity to visit a charming mix of mountain towns, plenty of outdoor recreation pit stops, and more.

As you’re traveling around Colorado this summer, here are a few routes to work into your itinerary – and remember, taking the scenic route in the Centennial State is always encouraged.

1. Loveland Pass (connecting I-70 to Silverthorne): Not only does this road travel across the Continental Divide, it also reaches 11,990 feet of elevation – there’s no shortage of stunning mountain views. A key perk of this road is that it’s easy to access, found off of I-70 and possible to work into a route that many people are traveling already. Along the way, drivers will pass Arapahoe Basin and Keystone, both of which offer opportunities for summer adventure.

2. Independence Pass (connecting Twin Lakes to Aspen): Known for being narrow, winding, and steep, this route opens seasonally in the summer and has a great summit area for stopping to enjoy an alpine scene. A key perk of taking this route is that it can cut off hours of travel when heading into or out of the southern side of Aspen.

3. U.S. 50 (connecting Gunnison to Montrose): This route travels through Curecanti National Recreation Area delivering stunning views of Blue Mesa Reservoir along the way. Consider popping off the route to check out Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, too.

4. The Million Dollar Highway (connecting Ouray to Silverton): Perhaps the most scenic road in the state of Colorado, drivers of this route should be comfortable traveling along a cliffside drop without guardrails. While photos and videos of this drive can seem a bit daunting, those without a fear of heights who are also following the speed limit and other traffic laws shouldn’t worry much. This route is one of two paved options when it comes to accessing Silverton, which happens to be one of Colorado’s last great ‘Wild West’ towns.

5. Molas Pass (connecting Silverton to Durango): If you’ve taken the Million Dollar Highway into Silverton, take Molas Pass out of the town while heading south. This route will provide sweeping views of the stunning San Juan Mountain Range while heading toward Durango.

6. Old Stage Road to Upper Gold Camp (connecting Colorado Springs to Victor): The definition of ‘taking the back road,’ this gravel and dirt route travels through the foothills of Pikes Peak, heading up in a rustic mining town. You’ll probably want a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle with a bit of clearance for this one. Some sections can get a little rough and conditions can vary.

7. Highway 6 through Clear Creek Canyon (connecting Floyd Hill to Golden): Often traveled by people visiting Black Hawk or those in search of outdoor recreation in Clear Creek Canyon, this scenic drive can serve as a great alternative to I-70.

8. Rabbit Ears Pass (connecting Kremmling to Steamboat Springs): Frequented by those traveling to and from Steamboat Springs, this mountain pass is one of the best places to see lush spring and summer conditions, as well as fall colors. Hiking opportunities can be found along this route, too.

9. U.S. 24 over Tennessee Pass (connecting Leadville to Minturn): This scenic route not only hits the Continental Divide at over 10,000 feet of elevation, it also travels over Red Cliff Bridge, which is a stunning scene. Stop at a mountain town for lunch along the way.

10. Cottonwood Pass (connecting Buena Vista to Almont): While much of this route is closed during the winter season due to its high elevation, this stunning drive is full of fourteener views. It’s worth noting that a lot of people enjoy this one without driving it as a thru-route, driving up wide lanes to the summit from Buena Vista, taking in the view, and heading back down into town for lunch. Once it’s open during the summer, it makes travel to the Crested Butte area much more convenient.

11. Wolf Creek Pass (connecting South Fork to Pagosa Springs): This stunning drive comes with panoramic mountain views, connecting the San Luis Valley to southwestern peaks. It’s steep and winding as it snakes through the rugged terrain, but it sure is beautiful. Soak in some hot springs once you hit Pagosa Springs.

12. The Highway of Legends (connecting Trinidad to Walsenburg): A national scenic byway for good reason, this drive has historic appeal, offers a stunning look at the state’s geology, and is very peaceful compared to some of the state’s more-trafficked routes.

13. Phantom Canyon Road (connecting Victor to Cañon City): This route is part of the Gold Belt Scenic Byway, offering an interesting look into Colorado’s Wild West past. It’s well-maintained, but it is dirt and gravel. A four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle with a bit of clearance is recommended.

14. Bighorn Sheep Canyon via U.S. 50 (connecting Cañon City to Salida): This 46-mile stretch of highway curves along the Arkansas River and features dramatic cliff views. Once you’re in Salida, you might as well continue onward after stopping for lunch to check out the Monarch Pass summit near town, as well.

That’s all for now – look for a part two in weeks to come. There’s no shortage of stunning drives around the state of Colorado. This list could probably include 50 options and still have more to spare.
