Only a short drive from the Denver area, Barr Lake State Park provides an escape from the city for both wildlife and people. The reservoir covers more than 1,950 acres of the 2,715-acre park, and is surrounded by cottonwoods and marshes that are home to aquatic plants. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the lake’s southern half is a wildlife refuge to shelter animals, as well as a greater variety and number of birds than anywhere else in Colorado.

History of the park:

The area of Barr Lake started out as a bison wallow more than 150 years ago, according to CPW. The animals, as well as wolves and elk and antelope, gathered in the area to enjoy the available water. The wildlife drew Native American tribes, including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute, to the area.

The Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroads created a link between Denver and Chicago passing right by the Barr Lake area, making it a perfect place for settlement in 1883. In 1886, construction began on the Burlington Canal, creating a reliable water source for settlers and a refuge for wildlife. The canal diverted water from the South Platte River to create Oasis Reservoir.

In 1908, the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company increased the size of the Oasis Dam, combining Oasis Reservoir and Burlington Reservoir, and creating what is now Barr Lake.

Throughout 1964-1965, Barr Lake is cleaned out due to clean water legislation and the flood of ’65 (after over 70 years of pollution from Denver’s untreated wastewater).

CPW got a recreational lease for Barr Lake State Park in 1975. The park opened to the public in 1977.

Barr Lake is known as a bird watcher’s paradise, as it is among the top birding destinations in the Centennial State. The lake features a refuge section that is off limits to boats and watersports so wildlife can thrive. Visitors can amble along the boardwalk and find the perfect spot for birdwatching.
