A fire that broke out on Saturday morning has destroyed Grant’s Cabin, which is located on the backside of Aspen Mountain.

According to a Facebook post from the Aspen Fire Protection District, they were dispatched to a structure fire on Richmond Ridge Road, located on the backside of Aspen Mountain, at about 10:27 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained at approximately 12:33 p.m.

More than 30 emergency responders from the Aspen Fire Protection District, Roaring Fork Fire Rescue, Aspen Ambulance District, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Aspen Skiing Company, and the Bureau of Land Management responded to the incident.

The structure, an approximately 400-square-foot log cabin, had flames showing up on the northwest side of the building. The fire was visible from Aspen Mountain Sundeck before responders arrived. When the crews arrived, they found the cabin fully involved in fire.

Because of the cabin’s remote location, firefighters implemented a response focusing on containing the structure fire and preventing its spread into the surrounding wildland fuels.

“With increasing afternoon winds, protecting nearby vegetation and mitigating the risk of a wildland fire became the primary operational objective,” reads the post.

Authorities will continue to monitor the area through the Pano AI wildfire detection camera network and will keep personnel on-site as needed to ensure the fire stays contained. A crew remained on scene overnight to make sure the fire did not spread.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

According to Aspen Trail Finder, Grant’s Cabin was built by Grant Timroth in 1988 on Richmond Ridge, a site on the backside of Aspen Mountain.
