Douglas County lifts fire restrictions after recent rainfall

Douglas County and the Town of Castle Rock lifted fire restrictions Tuesday following recent rainfall across the area, officials announced.

“While we have seen an increase in moisture in the last few days, community members are encouraged to be vigilant as the danger of fire is always present,” Douglas County officials said in a statement.

The county first implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions in December amid historically low rain and snowfall totals. The restrictions prohibited open burning and the use of fireworks, with violations carrying penalties of up to a $1,000 fine.

Despite the recent moisture, drought conditions have persisted. According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, as of May 26, about 96% of Douglas County was experiencing some level of drought. Of that, 38% of the county was classified under severe drought, while 57% was under moderate drought conditions.

Officials said they will continue to monitor conditions and urged residents to remain cautious as fire risk can quickly return.
