Rockies’ TJ Rumfield wins MLB honor after big May
TJ Rumfield is hitting the ball all over the park.
And sometimes out of the park — off the opponent’s head.
Rumfield, the Rockies’ first baseman, was named National League rookie of the month for May, the league said Wednesday. The 26-year-old played in 25 games and slashed .310/.400/.483 with 13 runs scored, three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBIs. Rumfield led National League rookies in batting average, on-base percentage, OPS and home runs during May.
He also ranked second in slugging percentage and third in hits.
His more-recent highlight was a lowlight for the Angels. Designated hitter Rumfield lofted a fly ball toward Angels outfielder Jo Adell, who saw the ball miss his glove, bounce off his head and over the fence for a Rockies home run. The Rockies won 8-2 Tuesday at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

The Rockies made a shrewd move in acquiring Rumfield from the New York Yankees in January, giving up right-handed pitcher Angel Chivili. Rumfield has proven solid in the field, too, having not committed an error in 374 chances.
Rumfield was honored with the Abby Greer Award as the team MVP of Colorado’s spring training. He’s the first Rockies player to be named National League player of the month since Nolan Jones in 2023.
Colorado returns home for a three-game series against Milwaukee that starts Friday.
