Broncos’ Malcolm Roach talks losing John Franklin-Myers in free agency: ‘I’m going to miss him a lot’
Malcolm Roach lost a teammate and friend in NFL free agency.
The Broncos defensive lineman participated in a charity home run derby, called Healthy Swings, on Thursday at Coors Field. The UCHealth sponsored challenge raised over $260,000 — the most in event history — with the winnings benefiting Athletics & Beyond, a Denver-based youth mentoring program. Roach joined seven of his Broncos teammates to help make it possible.
“It’s a great event,” Roach said. “I think UCHealth does a great job of putting this on.”
Roach also discussed the departure of Broncos defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers in free agency. He signed a three-year, $63-million contract with the Titans.
“I’m going to miss him a lot, for sure,” Roach said. “To be honest, any time you lose a great player, you know there’s going to be a big hole that you’ve got to replace. But also, when you lose a great friend and a great brother, that kind of hits hard. But we know the business of this (game).”
He also expressed confidence in the Broncos’ decision to draft Texas A&M interior defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim with their first pick (third round) of the NFL draft. Roach said there is “great depth” in the defensive line room this season.
That includes proven veterans like Zach Allen, D.J. Jones and Roach. Also young defensive linemen with big potential like Sai’vion Jones, Eyioma Uwazurike and Onyedim.
“Everybody in that room, I feel like, is ready,” Roach said. “We’ve got young guys trying to make a name for themselves also. It’s just more opportunity. Whoever steps up to the plate and makes the most of it, I think we’re going to do a great job.”
Roach played his well-known role as trash talker at the charity home run derby on Thursday. Roach told reporters he played high school baseball in Louisiana as “probably like a .250 or .300 batter” before adding: “It was going to be a home run or a flyout, to be honest.”
The Broncos signed Roach to a three-year contract extension in November worth up to $29.25 million. He will be a key piece of a defense returning most of its key members from a year ago. But that can all wait until fall.
“It’s my first time out at Coors Field,” Roach said. “So, I’m having a great time.”
